8 min read
Setting up Sinhala Unicode typing on your device is straightforward once you know the steps. This guide covers every major platform in 2026.
Windows 10 / 11
Windows includes a built-in Sinhala input method. Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region → Add a language. Search for "Sinhala" and install it. Once installed, press Win + Space to switch between English and Sinhala input. Windows offers both the standard Sinhala keyboard layout and a phonetic (Wijesekara) layout.
For phonetic Singlish-style input on Windows, use our online converter or install Google Input Tools for Chrome.
Mac (macOS)
Go to System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Add (+). Search for "Sinhala" and add the Sinhala keyboard. Use the Input Menu in the menu bar to switch between keyboards. Mac supports the standard Sinhala Unicode keyboard layout.
Android
Android 7 and above have built-in Sinhala support in Gboard. Open Gboard settings, tap Languages → Add keyboard → Sinhala. Gboard supports both a Sinhala script keyboard and a Singlish phonetic layout. The Helakuru keyboard app is also widely recommended for Singlish input.
iPhone / iPad (iOS)
Go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard. Scroll to find Sinhala and add it. Switch keyboards using the globe icon on the keyboard. iOS supports Sinhala Unicode input natively from iOS 13 onwards.
