Complete Singlish Typing Guide — Type Sinhala Using English Letters
7 min read
Singlish typing is a phonetic method of entering Sinhala text using a standard English keyboard. Instead of learning a new keyboard layout, you type Sinhala words as they sound in English, and the converter produces the correct Sinhala Unicode output.
This guide covers every key mapping in our Singlish converter, with practical examples to help you type confidently.
Vowels
Sinhala has both independent vowels (used at the start of a word or syllable) and vowel signs (attached to consonants). In Singlish, you simply type the vowel sound after a consonant and the converter handles the rest.
aඅe.g. amma → අම්මා
aa / Aආe.g. aata → ආටා
iඉe.g. ithin → ඉතින්
ii / Iඊe.g. Iru → ඊරු
uඋe.g. uda → උඩ
uu / Uඌe.g. Ura → ඌර
eඑe.g. ela → එළ
ee / Eඒe.g. Eka → ඒක
oඔe.g. oba → ඔබ
Consonants
Sinhala has a rich set of consonants including aspirated sounds (like kh, gh, th, dh) and retroflex sounds (T, D, N). Capital letters are used for retroflex consonants that don't exist in English.

- →Use double letters for long vowels: 'aa' for ආ, 'ii' for ඊ, 'uu' for ඌ.
- →Capital T, D, N produce retroflex sounds: ට, ඩ, ණ — common in many Sinhala words.
- →The combination 'sh' gives ශ (sha). 'Sh' (capital S) gives ෂ (sha aspirated).
- →Spaces between words are preserved — type naturally as you would in English.
- →Numbers and punctuation pass through unchanged.
- →For compound consonants like ක්ෂ, type the components in sequence.
