Sinhala Fonts for Graphic Design in Sri Lanka
5 min read
Graphic designers working with Sinhala text face a unique challenge: the selection of high-quality Sinhala Unicode fonts suitable for display and design work is smaller than for Latin scripts, but it is growing. Here is a practical guide for designers.
Best Fonts for Display & Headings
Noto Sans Sinhala (Bold/Black weights): The bold and black weights of Noto Sans Sinhala work well for headlines, social media graphics, and poster headings. The geometric construction of the letterforms maintains clarity at large sizes.
Noto Serif Sinhala: For editorial and magazine-style designs, Noto Serif Sinhala adds elegance and traditional feel suitable for cultural, religious, or governmental content.
Font Pairing for Bilingual Designs
Most Sri Lankan design work is bilingual — Sinhala with English. Good pairings include Noto Sans Sinhala with Inter or Poppins for modern designs, and Noto Serif Sinhala with Playfair Display or Merriweather for traditional or editorial styles. Both Noto families are designed to harmonize with other scripts at the same size.
Social Media Graphics
For social media posts, use Noto Sans Sinhala at 24px or larger. Avoid very thin weights at small sizes as Sinhala characters have complex strokes that become unclear at low resolution. Black or ExtraBold weights perform best on photo backgrounds.
Photoshop & Illustrator Compatibility
Adobe software supports Sinhala Unicode from CC 2019 onwards. Enable Middle Eastern & South Asian features in Photoshop preferences for proper Sinhala text rendering. Use World-Ready Paragraph Composer for correct ligature handling. In Illustrator, set the document to use the same text engine.
Canva
Canva supports Noto Sans Sinhala directly from its font library. Search "Noto Sans Sinhala" in the font picker. Sinhala Unicode text typed in Canva renders correctly and exports properly to PNG and PDF.
Avoiding FM Fonts in Design
Do not use FM fonts in design work. They cannot be reliably exported to PDF, do not render on other machines without the font installed, and will not appear in web exports. Always use Unicode fonts for any design work that will be shared or published.
